In this introductory lecture, Dr Okeson presents an overview
of orofacial pain and why it is often misdiagnosised and
mismanaged. He discusses our present information base
and the varying degree of scientific support. Often, our
treatment strategies are based on our most familiar
techniques and not always on the patient’s needs.
Understanding the global picture of orofacial pain is the
beginning of helping your patients. In order to be successful
we must first consider all the possible conditions that your
patient may have when he or she presents to your office.
From these possibilities comes the selection of the proper
diagnosis that leads to the most successful treatment
strategy. Knowing the complete picture reduces confusion
and helps the clinician find his or her appropriate role in
management.
