Understanding the anatomy and biomechanics of the
temporomandibular joint is essential for proper
management. The clinician cannot successfully treat a
“disorder” if he or she does not understand “order”. In this
presentation Dr. Okeson reviews the basic anatomy of the
TMJ and how it functions. The clinician must understand and
appreciate basic orthopedic principles that relate to all
synovial joints. The functional relationships of bones,
ligaments, discs and muscles are described in an orthopedic
manner that emphasizes the clinical importance of each and
how they relate to your patient’s complaints. When a patient
reports to your office with a “dysfunction” your treatment is
designed to bring about normal “function”.  The clinician,
therefore, must have a sound understanding of normal to be
successful. In this presentation, Dr. Okeson reviews the
information needed to understand how this most
complicated joint functions.
