This presentation brings the concept of orthopedic stability
presented in lecture #3 (part 1) into the precise role of
occlusion as an etiologic factor of temporomandibular
disorders. Dr. Okeson discusses two considerations that help
explain how the occlusal condition may relate to TMD. He
separates the role of occlusion in muscle disorders from the
role of occlusion in intracapsular disorders. Understanding
these concepts helps the clinician better appreciate how the
patient’s TMD complaint may or may not relate to the occlusal
condition. Understanding these concepts also gives the
clinician the insight needed to develop an appropriate
treatment plan. This presentation puts occlusion into its proper
perspective in the practice of dentistry and in the management
of TMD patients.
Lectures #3 and #4 represent part 1 and part 2 of a series on the etiology of TMD.
