In this presentation, Dr. Okeson looks back at the history of
pain and how our understanding of this very common human
experience has changed. The “Gate Control Theory” is
reviewed and why this was such a landmark paper in
understanding pain. The current concepts of pain modulation
are presented along with the clinical considerations that make
them so important to the clinician. This presentation clarifies
why pain is such a varied experience between individuals, even
in the presence of similar tissue injury. The mechanistic model
of pain is compared to the biopsychosocial model and how
they vary in acute and chronic pain conditions.
