The most critical task for the orofacial pain clinician is
establishing the correct diagnosis. It is only with a proper
diagnosis that effective treatment can be selected. The data
needed to establish the diagnosis comes from the information
you receive from the patient. This information comes by way
of the history and your examination of the masticatory
structures. In this presentation, Dr. Okeson reviews all the
information that must be acquired from the patient to establish
the diagnosis. He emphasizes the importance of listening
carefully to the patient as she or he describes the pain. Dr.
Okeson expertly organizes the information that must be
attained in a simple and logical manner. He then reviews each
aspect of a detailed head and neck examination. Collecting
and understanding the information you receive from the history
and examination allows the clinician to establish the correct
diagnosis.
