Muscle pain is the most common TM disorder seen in the
dental office. Yet many clinicians do not appreciate what
causes this type of pain and how it should be managed. Too
often the clinician believes that muscle pain is caused by
myospasm, when in reality spasm is quite rare. In this lecture,
Dr. Okeson presents data that will question the traditional
approaches to treating muscle pain. He will review and explain
a clinical model that will help the clinician better understand
and manage muscle pain disorders. Effective management of
muscle disorders must begin with understanding the
underlining pathophysiology of muscle pain. The masticatory
muscle pain model that Dr. Okeson discusses differentiates six
different presentations of muscle pain that must be considered
before therapy can be selected. After describing the
relationship of all six muscle conditions, he goes into detail
explaining the most common muscle condition seen in a dental
office, local muscle soreness. It is critical that all clinicians be
able to recognize this most common, acute muscle pain
complaint.

Lectures #15 and #16 represent part 1 and part 2 of a series on understanding and
managing masticatory muscle pain disorders. If you would like both DVDs at a
